National Children Activity Week 8th-15th October 2007

'Jumping for Joy' was the theme for the 14th National Children's Activity Week Campaign.

Jumping for Joy!

National Children Activity Week 2007

National Children’s Activity Week, a Tumble Tots initiative which ran from 8th-14th October 2007, partnered with Cartoonito a brand new pre-school channel from Cartoon Network on Sky 619 and non other than Britain’s best known female athlete, Olympic Gold Medallist, and mother of three, Sally Gunnell OBE. National Children’s Activity Week is designed to bring to the fore the importance of encouraging children to participate in physical activity from a young age and the vital role parents play.

Look at the statistic below! How scary is this!
  • One fifth of children will be overweight or obese by 2010.
  • There are more than one million obese children in the UK (BMA 2005).
  • One third of children aged 2 -11 have less than 60 minutes of moderate activity each day (BMA 2005).
  • Obese children are more likely to be obese adults this is why Tumble Tots encourages physical play from such an early age.

These changes in lifestyle are alarming and one of Prime Minister Gordon Brown first initiatives is that children should spend two hours of physical activity in school and a further two-to-three hours outside school by 2011.
“Children are never too young to get active”, says British athlete Sally Gunnell. “Right from the word go, activity should be a way of life and the impetus must come from parents. Kids love playing the games their parents played. Activities don’t have to cost a fortune, try making an obstacle course in the garden or taking a trip to the park. The point is to have fun and join in with them, because that’s what they really like,” adds Sally, an avid supporter of National Children’s Activity Week campaign.

Active play brings benefits on so many different levels. It promotes good health, building a strong heart, developing strong muscles and bones, reducing body fat and probably cutting the risk of some chronic disease later in life.

'Jumping is especially useful in building strong bones' explains Jeanette Hobart, chair of the training committee and a Youth Moves teacher for the Keep Fit Association. 'It is an especially effective type of physical activity, and of course children enjoy it so much. You don't need to ask small children to jump around. Most of them regularly jump for joy anyway!
