World Maternal Mental Health Matters Day

Part of Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness Week

1st May 2019

National

Today is the start of the third annual UK Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness week, organised by the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership.

This is a week-long campaign dedicated to talking about perinatal mental illness, advocating for mums affected by mental illnesses and helping them to access the information and support they need. To find out more about the week, including the daily themes, visit the MMHA guide to the week here.

Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness Week can generate a huge amount of grassroots activity around the UK. It provides organisations concerned with babies’ emotional well-being with an opportunity to highlight how support for parent-infant relationships can be incredibly valuable for some families affected by perinatal mental illness.

It can be difficult to talk about the link between maternal mental illness and babies’ development. These two new infographics describe the importance of early relationships for babies’ emotional development.

They explain how stressors such as maternal mental illness can make it harder for parents to provide their babies with the sensitive, responsive care that babies need – especially if these problems occur in the presence of other adversity (click on the images below to download the full PDF).
